History

Kimura Shukokai Karate is a traditional style of karate based on Tani-ha Shito-ryu, a branch of Shito-ryu karate developed by Chojiro Tan in the late 1940's. The first dojo where Tani taught his style was in Kobe, Japan. It opened in 1946 and was named ShukoKai, meaning the "Way for All".
Soke Shigeru Kimura was born in Kobe, Japan in 1941. At the age of 16 he started training with Sensei Tani. In 1965 he left Japan and started teaching around the world. First in Africa, then Europe and England, and then eventually the United States. During this time he continued to develop the Tani-Shukokai style, always looking to increase the effectiveness of his karate. The manner of Shukokai continued to evolve and eventually looked quite different which is why the term Kimura's Shukokai is used today. By 1991, Kimura's Shukokai was being practiced by 20,000 students in 14 countries.
